Reuben's a month old on the 13th September 2011, and Jo was being released from a month of confinement. We brought Reuben to see Jo's granny (our custom) and then proceeded to bring him to the Spring Shopping Mall (custom according to the confinement lady who advised us to bring Reuben to places with lots of ppl so that he would grow up be brave and strong). Then followed by dinner in the evening with friends and family.

Weaned baby!!

Ethan has finally weaned himself off the pacifiers. He started rejecting it a couple of weeks ago. In replacement of the pacifiers, he would call out for "nen-nen" (the milk) every now and then and stick the milk bottle into his mouth without actually sucking the milk. We guessed it's just to relieve himself from the discomfort caused by growth of his new teeth.

Continuing from yesterday (at Semenggoh Wildlife Centre), today we visited the Matang Park. As today is a public holiday (Gawai Dayak) here, there were hundreds of people streaming into the park. We were there around eight in the morning.There were not many people then but people started to roll in around 10am. There were a lot of them having barbecue there and the smell really distracted *slurp* *slurp* us from our macro photography.

To our surprise and Jo's credit for PERSISTENCY, Ethan was judged the winner for the photo contest. We are now back home, Jo and Ethan browsing through the prizes and I am here updating the blog on the great news. Ethan is one of the 12 finalists for another contest, Boulevard's "Baby of the Year 2009" which would be announced tomorrow.

Last night as Ethan was wearing a new set of outfit, I told Jo that I was going to take some photos of him in his new clothes. A few shoots into the session, he tried to stand up, stepped on the house phone and fell on his face causing his lip to bleed. The crying was loud and the session ended there and then, and below are some of the good shots taken right before the incident. And oh yeah, he'd finally called out to Jo, "MOMMY" a couple of days ago.

Plight of the Natives of Sarawak

I went along with people from Bloomberg, Malaysiakini and NGO to this beautiful Kampung Bengoh. This is my first encounter with the natives who live inside the jungle. Taking my first step into the jungle, I had this wonderful feeling that this is going to be a good trip for my photography experience. Kpg Bengoh, projected for the building of a dam will be submerged in water. The villagers who have lived there for more than two decades will have to move out and it will be the end of this beautiful place & their culture.

This man is said to be more than a 100 years old, according to the villagers.

Mr Jeplin's mother preparing breakfast for us. The meals were cooked with burning wood and the smell & taste were great.

The primary school being shared between Rejoi and Semban, have 55 students in it. Rejoi electricity are powered by solar energy but it's only of a single bulb and a radio consumption for each household.

Below, you'll see that the work for the dam has started at the entry point to the villages above, even without the full consent of the villagers to move out of there and be relocated.

Bako National Park 3D2N

Was at Bako National Park with fellow photographers from 17th to 19th April 2009 and came back with the following pictures and lots of sand flies' bites. Food & drinks served at the restaurant were expensive and average in taste, so would highly recommend that you prepare and bring your own should you plan for an outing at the park. Most important of all should be the insect repellent.

Ethan was down with high fever, plus bad sore throat during the later part of it for the last 2 weeks. He made 4 visits to the doctors (different paediatricians each time) during the whole ordeal and got us all worked up. He has since started to recover during the last 2 days and is now back to his normal self and we managed to coax him to pose for some pictures.

Sleepy Town No More

This town, Batang Ai was awoken from its slumber, at least for these couple of weeks. These series of photographs was taken on the 29th March 2009, the day of the candidate nomination for Batang Ai state seat. I was not able to post it up earlier due to busy schedule and as you're reading this post, I should be on my way up to Batang Ai again. The atmosphere during the nomination was estatic, I was standing right in between the 2 differing groups of supporters and I was drowned by the chanting from both sides. As usual, BN has their election machineries used to the hilts, likewise for the oppositions who is not losing out by having the components of DAP, SNAP and PAS assisting their PKR counterpart. Will fill in more later after today's trip, hopefully will be travelling to some of the longhouses.

Had this done a couple of days ago. Pictures were taken with the cam sitting on a tripod and was manipulated with photoshop to create the results below. Things to watch out for is the camera settings, light source and especially the exposure.

Shadow Play

This is an ancient cloth-iron which was used by my mom (bought by my dad). Being free at home, I cleaned it up a little for this photo shoot.

In this picture, I'd placed the iron on my glass table top (for reflection purpose) and taking it from a high up angle with a strobe to the left of my camera. To bring out the iron from the background, I placed another strobe light behind and to the right of the iron, thereby creating a 3d effect.

For this take, I also used 2 strobe lighting and a reflector and 2 pieces of white cardboard to create a light-tent effect (those used for product photography). The main strobe is again placed on the left of my cam, with the reflector on the opposite (pointing to the front of the iron) to fill away the shadow, with the iron sitting on top of the white cardboard. As my house does not have any white wall, I used the 2nd strobe at full power to blow out my wall to create the white background in this pic.

Today's outing at Stutong Park was fruitful. There were tonnes of mushroom sprouting around, managed to capture pictures of a spider and also an unidentified species of spiky worm (its body looks like those green fungus growing on trees when viewed with our naked eyes).

8-Hours Work

From Santubong to Kuching Town were the places we covered on a Sunday, February 15 2009. We managed to photograph the sunrise at Santubong Bridge. Though we were initially at Kampung Buntal, but because it was pretty cloudy, we had to shift our destination back to the bridge. From there, we proceeded to the Main Bazaar where we had our breakfast and did a walk-around at the bazaar covering the streets, shops, people and temple.

Swimming Lesson Number 1

Ethan went swimming with his dad. Other than the coughs from gulping a couple mouthful of the pool water, he seemed to be enjoying himself. All the shots were taken in the evening on our first day at Damai Beach Resort, except for the last two which were shot the next morning.

Ethan celebrating his first Chinese New Year. In the last couple of days, he's learned to sit up on his own. He's progressing fairly nicely but has yet to call me "mummy", "ma", "ibu", "mother" or "whatnot". However, he has already been calling out to his dad, "papa". I wish it was the other way around but am not complaining because looking at him makes my heart melt, every time.

Back to Macro Fun

After a long break from macro photography due to other workload, I am back at it again and it was fun. Here are some pictures taken at the Stutong Park last Sunday.

They call this "Jumping Spider". I only managed to capture the front half of it as it moves very fast.

I would call this "Camouflage Dragon Fly" because if you do not look carefully, you would not have noticed it on the tree due to its tree-like coloured body.

Due to the backlighting, the outline of this spider pic looks pretty soft.

I had to cover (with cardboard) the lights coming into these tiny mushroom to get a sharper picture, or else I'll only get a near-to-transparent effect which isn't very nice.

A colorful grasshopper, took this with flash to boost the color even more and also it create a dark background.

Kampung Giam

Without taking up photography, I would have forgotten about this place for the rest of my life. My trip to Kpg Giam last Sunday brought back little memory of my last visit there as that happened more than 10 years ago. However, I find the place very interesting and the lifestyle of the people there simple and yet cosy, but do ask for permission before you start taking photos of them especially when they are doing their washing in the stream.
